Southern Checkers

Checkers the way it is actually played: a jump is not optional, and one that can carry on has to. Crowning stops you where you stand, even mid-jump. Play the computer at three strengths, pass one tablet back and forth across the kitchen table, or send somebody four letters and play them wherever they are — no sign-up for either of you, and nothing to install. Free, all of it.

Where’s That From?

A verse comes up with nothing attached to it — no book, no chapter, no heading. Read it and say where it came from, choosing off a shelf of all sixty-six. Being close still counts: the book itself pays 100, but the right part of Scripture — the Law, the Minor Prophets, Paul’s Letters — is worth 40 on its own, and the right Testament 15. Reaching for Ezra when the answer is Nehemiah is not the same as reaching for Revelation. Ten verses a round, and every one is told to you afterwards, book, chapter and verse. The verses are chosen rather than picked at random — each holds a name, a place or a turn of phrase that points somewhere, and genealogies and passages that appear in two books are left out. Berean Standard Bible. Free, all of it.

Quick Shepherd

Sixty-six seconds, one for each book of the Bible — sort them into the right pen before the clock runs out. Pen six in a row and the pens change: Old and New gives way to Gospel and Letter, then Law and Prophet, then Major and Minor.

1 2 3

Books of the Bible in Order

Learn all sixty-six, front to back. Tap the books in canonical order — the whole Bible, one Testament, or a single division like the Law, the Minor Prophets, or Paul’s Letters. Switch to Which Division? and place each book in its part of Scripture instead. Your best time and cleanest run are kept for every list.

Twins & Tens

Premium Features

Clear the board by pairing up twins — two of the same number — or any two tiles that add up to ten. Classic plays by the real rules — a pair has to be neighbors, though cleared tiles don’t block the way — and Relaxed lets you match anywhere. Out of pairs? Add the leftovers to the bottom and keep going. Premium adds Undo, Hint, and three dressed-up boards where every number gets its own color: Eggs, played out in the chicken yard with two baskets that fill as you gather and a hen to keep you company; Pumpkins, out in the patch from cream through deep orange, with two crates and a scarecrow; and Ornaments, nine glass baubles that go onto a pair of little trees while a snowman looks on. Each of the three has a whole library of tips and old sayings, and a line saved back for a game you finish clean.

Back Roads Sunday Drive

Premium Features

A one-button drift down a winding dirt road, out past the fields, fence lines, grazing cattle and somebody’s tractor left in the corn. The old pickup never stops rolling — tap the spacebar (or the screen) to switch her slide from right to left. Every bend throws you toward its outside, so read the road ahead and keep all four wheels out of the ditch. Grab peaches for a bonus, and take the wide road if you want more room — each width keeps its own best. Free to play in the White truck down a summer road; Premium takes the same drive out in spring, fall or winter — blossom on the trees, the fields cut and gold, or snow over the whole place with the ruts showing through — and adds a dashboard radio of old-time standards, nine more paint jobs, and syncs your best run.

Back Forty Skeet

Premium Features

Twenty-five clay birds off the back forty. One comes out of the high house on your left, one out of the low house on your right, and they are gone in about two seconds. Click or tap the spot you want the pattern to land — but the shot takes a beat to get out there, so you have to aim ahead of her, and the far edges of the field want more lead than the middle. Fifteen singles, then five pairs. Break all twenty-five and you have shot a straight 25. Send a friend your exact birds and see who shoots the better card. Free to play with the Field Walnut gun; Premium adds three more finishes and saves your best card.

Pop the Lollipops

Premium Features

A shooting gallery of twirling candy. Rows of lollipops march past, halt, and march again — and every one of them is spinning. Face-on it is a wide, easy target; a moment later it has turned to a sliver you will probably miss. Catch one edge-on anyway and the shot pays double. The little ones are worth the most: a Jawbreaker pays 5, a Button pays 40. Twice a round a flying saucer drifts over with a Sucker on its roof, worth 100 — shoot it off and the saucer flies on bare, so spend another shell on the hull for 25 more before it gets away. Six shots to a magazine, sixty-six seconds on the clock, and they spin faster while they are stopped. Free to play with two sets of candy; Premium adds four more — Peppermint Tin, Creamsicle, Bubblegum Machine and Midnight Sweets.

20 50

Duck Dash

Premium Features

A carnival duck pond. Rows of ducks paddle past in both directions, and the number under each one is what it is worth — the big slow ones pay 10, the small quick ones 50. But one color is off limits: shoot a duck of that color and it scores nothing, costs you one of your three lives, and a new color is called — so now it is a different duck you have to leave alone. Six shots to a magazine, sixty seconds on the clock, and the pond slows and surges as it goes, and a voice calls every color. Free to play with ducks; Premium adds a Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Lights.

Hummingbird Hover

Premium Early Access

Out on the porch with a camera, first thing. Hummingbirds work the feeder and the trumpet vine — and a hummingbird is never traveling, he is hanging still or already gone. He holds the air a second or two, then darts, and a frame taken mid-dart comes out a blur you paid a shot for. While he hovers he turns: broadside he is wide and easy, but come round head-on and he is a sliver worth double. The small ones pay the most — a Ruby-throat is 5, the tiny Calliope 40. Twice a round two of them come through in a chase, and both in one frame is worth 100. Six frames before the camera writes to the card, and ninety unhurried seconds of light. Nothing is harmed and nothing is kept but the picture. Free to play in Sun Up — the hour after sunrise, when they feed hardest; Premium adds five more kinds of light — First Light, Morning, High Noon, Overcast and Coming Storm. Premium members can play it now, a fortnight before it opens to everyone on September 16.

Duster Run

Six stretches of back country, flown low and flown fast — a ridge, a flyway full of buzzards and skeins of geese coming the other way in a V, a field burn throwing up embers you cannot shoot at all, a town of grain silos to slalom, a narrow holler with a roof on it, and the barn at the end. The whole way down, the tank is draining, and the only fuel out here is in the gas cans somebody left sitting in the field. Your shot flies flat and your dust falls forward, so what is in the air wants one and what is on the ground is usually easier dusted — though a can will take a flat shot too, if you dare fly that low. You also carry one tank of water a stretch: enough for the burning brush pile somewhere out there, or for the one ember you get to say no to — not both. About three cans in five just holds you level. Miss more than that for long and you are gliding. Windsocks are planted through every stretch so a bad landing never costs you the whole of it. Premium members also find ⭐ stars hung out in the country, off the line you would fly anyway; they are kept between runs and spent before the next one on extra water, half the buzzards, or a reserve tank. Reach the barn and the country starts over, faster and thirstier. Free to play, all six stretches and every lap; Premium adds five more paint jobs, a stretch to practice on, the stars, and your best run synced across devices.

Shuffleboard Social

Premium Features

A long waxed board down the side of the fellowship hall. Pull back and let go — how far you drag is how far it slides. A strip beside the board fills as you pull, with the 1, 2 and 3 bands marked along it, so you can see which one you are about to stop in before you let go. There are no rails: slide it wide and it goes off the side, slide it hard and it goes off the end. A puck left hanging over the lip is worth 4, and it takes almost nothing to knock one off. Playing the house, only one side scores an end — whoever is nearest the lip, for every puck of theirs ahead of the other side's best — which is why taking the other fellow out is worth as much as landing well. Four pucks each, first to 15. Or play the same match on the simple count, where both sides just add up what they have in the bands and a good end is always worth something. Two players on one device play the same match by hand, passing the phone across when the board says whose slide it is — or go on your own, eight pucks, everything counts where it lies. Four houses to play, and the two free ones are the ends of the row: the Sunday Social is wide of the mark as often as not, and the Saturday Serious barely misses and takes your aiming marker away. Premium adds the two in between, your pick of background music, and five more boards beyond the hard maple.

Lightning Bug Summer

Premium Features

Out in the yard after supper with your grandmother’s jar. A lightning bug is only there when she blinks — the rest of the time she is drifting somewhere in the dark, so you swing where you reckon she got to. Wait too long and she is gone. Three kinds are out, told apart by how they blink rather than by color, and once an evening the whole field falls in step and lights up together. When the time is up the lid comes off and every one of them goes home. Free to play with the Mason Jar or a Coffee Can with slits in the top; Premium adds four more containers — Blue Ball, Amber, Clear Quart and a Mayonnaise Jar — and saves your best evening.
