Up Yonder
Granddaddy put rockets on the truck. Point it straight up out of the back forty and keep going — past the pines, through the thunderheads, and on up to where the air gives out and the stars come out.
- Steer with the arrow keys or WASD. On a phone, put your thumb on the stage and the truck comes to it.
- Shoot by holding the space bar. On a phone it shoots on its own while your thumb is down — you only have to steer.
- Everything that comes down will knock a life off you if it gets to you. You have three, and nothing out here shoots back except the thing at the top.
- The climb goes through five stretches of sky, and each one has its own trouble — june bugs low down, crows in the pines, hail the size of a washtub in the thunderheads, buzzards and ballooning spiders riding the high air, and up where it gives out, skeeters and gallnippers the size of a mailbox.
- What you shoot sometimes leaves something behind: a mason jar is a shield that takes one hit for you, a peach spreads your shot three ways, sweet tea speeds it up, and a biscuit is a whole life back.
- At 14,000 feet there is a weather balloon the size of a barn hanging up there with somebody’s camera slung under it, and it has noticed you. Pop it and you drop back to the back forty and climb it all again — same sky, everything coming down faster. Your feet keep adding up across the lot.
- Every foot is a point, and so is everything you knock down. Every climb has a number, so you can hand a friend the very same one.
