Coopdoku

Set one hen in every row, every column and every pen — and never two hens touching, because hens peck. Nothing else is written on the board: the pens themselves tell you where every hen has to go. Three hearts for the ones you get wrong, and never a guess needed.

  • One hen to a row, one to a column, one to a pen. The pens are the colored patches, and there are exactly as many pens as there are rows.
  • No two hens may touch — not side by side, not corner to corner. Hens peck.
  • That is every rule. There are no numbers anywhere: the shapes of the pens are the whole of the puzzle.
  • Tap a square to cross it off, and tap it again to clear the cross. The crosses are only your own notes, and you will want plenty of them — they cost nothing and never count against you.
  • Double-tap to set a hen. One tap lifts her again, for nothing. Setting her is the only move that can cost you, so it is the only one that asks for two taps.
  • On a mouse, right-click sets or lifts a hen outright — no double-click to land, and nothing to time.
  • A hen who breaks a rule you could see for yourself just turns red — fix her and carry on, it costs nothing.
  • A hen who breaks no rule at all and is still in the wrong square costs you a heart. You have three. That is the only thing you could not have worked out, so it is the only thing that is charged for.
  • The move that cracks most yards: if a hen were here, where would that pen go? If the answer is nowhere, she cannot be here. Cross it off.
  • Every yard has exactly one answer, and it can always be reached a step at a time. If you find yourself guessing, there is still something to read on the board.
  • On a keyboard: the arrows move, space crosses a square off and clears it again, Enter sets or lifts a hen, and X wipes a square outright.
  • This puzzle is an old one with other names — Queens, or Star Battle — and the moves have been written up properly elsewhere. There is a good guide to them here. A queen there is a hen here, and a region is a pen; everything else reads the same.

or press Enter — every yard is a fresh one
