Hover Holler

A fellow up the holler bolted a set of thrusters onto an old coupe, and now the only question left is whether you go around what is in the road or over it. Six stretches to the covered bridge, and a clock running the whole way.

  • Steer with the arrow keys or A and D. On a phone, the two round buttons bottom left.
  • Hold the thrust — space bar, up arrow, or the button bottom right — and the car lifts off the road. Hold it longer and you go higher. There is only so much of it: the tank burns down fast and fills back up slow, so you cannot fly the whole road. Picking which thing to fly over is the game.
  • Thrust for speed. Point the same thrusters backward instead of down — T or the down arrow, or the ⏩ Speed button on a phone — and the old coupe runs about a third faster than it has any business doing. It comes out of the same tank the hopping does, so every second of it is a hop you are not going to get.
  • Flip. Once you are in the air, left and right stop steering and start rolling you. Come all the way round and land level and you get the roll back as thrust, plus points. Land a good way off square and you will bounce it — that costs you some speed, and the flip still counts for points, but you get no thrust back. Only a real wreck of a landing spins you out. It only rolls if you press it after you leave the ground, so a hop taken mid-turn will not throw you.
  • Everything in the road can be gone around except the washouts, which take the whole road — those you have to fly, and the road is always clear for a good way ahead of one so you have the thrust to do it.
  • Clip something and you lose most of your speed. Run off into the weeds and you lose some too — and keep going out there and you will find the trees, which take nearly all of it. Nothing ends the run but the clock.
  • Every checkpoint puts time back on it. Reach the covered bridge and whatever is left on the clock is worth points, a run with nothing clipped is worth a good deal more, and one with no more than three is worth half of that again.
  • Pause any time with P or Escape, or the ⏸️ button up in the corner. The clock stops with it, and however long you are gone, you come back where you stood.
  • On a desktop the ⛶ button gives the road the width of the window. It is the same road either way — only bigger to look at — and it remembers which you prefer.
  • Every road has a number, so you can hand a friend the very same one.
  • Watch a run back. Every run you drive is kept, and Premium members can sit and watch it again from the intro or from the end screen. It is not a recording of the picture — it is the road number and the moments your hands moved, a couple of kilobytes, played back as the game itself. Any key stops it.
  • A horn on the start line, if you want one, and a sound while you are coming over in the air. Both are Premium, and both are noise: nothing about them changes the run.
  • What you drive is yours to pick on this screen. The old coupe in barn red is free; Premium opens the other five rides and seven more colors. They are paint and nothing else — every one of them is the same width in the road, the same weight on the thrusters, and drives exactly the same.
